CBS picks James Corden to host 2016 Tonys

CBS is going all-in to promote James Corden, picking the Late Late Show host to host the 70th Annual Tony Awards in June.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to be hosting the Tony Awards,” Corden said in a statement released by CBS today. “Both times I’ve worked on Broadway have been amongst the happiest times of my professional life. I consider it a huge honor to be asked to host such an incredible night. It’s gonna be fun, I can’t wait to dust off my tap shoes!”

This will be Corden’s first time hosting. The comedian is a Tony winner himself, taking home the Tony for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play for One Man, Two Guvnors in 2012.

Corden has been hosting the Late Late Show since March 2015 and has scored viral hits with his popular Carpool Karaoke segments. CBS is hoping to introduce him to an even wider audience by airing a new episode after The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s special Super Bowl 50 episode on Feb. 7.

Corden’s credits include The Wrong Mans, Gavin and Stacey, Into The Woods< Begin Again and How To Lose Friends and Alienate People.

The Tonys are set for Sunday, June 12 at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. They are handed out by the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing.
