Mercer University guard Jibri Bryan shot and killed outside a convenience store

Tragedy struck the Mercer University basketball team on Feb. 2 when one of its players was shot in the head and killed outside of a convenience store.

Sporting News noted that the school’s president released a statement following the death of Bears guard Jibri Bryan.

"The Mercer community is grieving the tragic death of graduate student Jibri Bryan, who has been part of the University family for six years," said president William D. Underwood, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Bryan family."

Mercer athletic director Jim Cole also expressed his condolences to Bryan’s family.

"First and foremost, my heartfelt sympathy goes out to the Bryans," athletic director Jim Cole said. "The Mercer athletic family is deeply saddened by Jibri's passing. Jibri was always cheerful and greeted everyone in the department with a smile. He will not only be missed by his basketball family but by all of us in the University Athletic Department."

The Telegraph reported that police said the shooting occurred around 4 p.m., near the university in downtown Macon, Georgia, and the 23-year-old athlete was found dead in the driver's seat of a Chevy Monte Carlo.

So far investigators have not released a possible motive for the shooting, but said they do have a lead on who may have committed the crime as it was captured by surveillance cameras.

Bryan was a member of the 2013-14 team that upset No. 3 seed Duke in the NCAA tournament.
