Nate Parker’s ‘Birth of a Nation’ gets awards season release date

Fox Searchlight is ready to be back in the Oscars race again, giving Nate Parker’s Sundance smash hit The Birth of a Nation an awards season release date.

Last month, the film captured the imagination of everyone who was at Sundance, sparking a bidding war between distributors. Parker and his team eventually went with Fox Searchlight, which mounted successful Oscar campaigns for 12 Years A Slave and Birdman. (The distributor also has this year’s Best Picture nominee Brooklyn, and 20th Century Fox also released The Revenant.) Fox Searchlight reportedly paid a record $17.5 million for the picture.

Oscar buzz already started, of course, and Deadline reports that Fox Searchlight gave the film an Oct. 7 release date. The distributor did not say if this is the date it will start its wide release or if this is only a limited release date.

The Birth of a Nation stars Parker as Nat Turner, the slave who lead a revolt in 1813 Virginia. The cast also features Armie Hammer, Penelope Ann Miller, Colman Domingo, Dwight Henry, Aja Naomi King, Esther Scott, Mark Boone Jr., Jackie Earle Haley, Gabrielle Union and Roger Guenveur Smith. Turner wrote and directed the film.

Fox will also be releasing Gambit on Oct. 7. The Girl on the Train, The Accountant and Middle School: The Worst Years Of My Life are also scheduled for that weekend.
