Rutgers Corey Sanders suspended for violating team rules

Rutgers guard Corey Sanders was suspended by the university’s basketball coach Eddie Jordan on Monday.

According to NJ.com, Sanders was suspended for two weeks for a violation of team rules. He will miss the next four games due to the suspension. This is the second time this season that Sanders has been suspended. He missed the season opener while serving a self-imposed suspension after participating in a non-sanctioned basketball event last summer. Sanders is the second Rutgers player to be suspended in the last week. On Feb. 9, Deshawn Freeman was suspended indefinitely for failure to meet team expectations.

"Although I am disappointed to announce this suspension, I believe that it will serve as a valuable learning experience for Corey," Jordan said in a statement. "The team will continue to work hard in his absence and looks forward to his return."

Sanders, who is a freshman, is one of the contenders for the Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors. He has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week twice and is averaging 16.2 points and leads Rutgers in assists per game (4.1) and steals per game (1.7), according to ESPN. He was ranked 62nd in the 2015 class by Recruiting Nation.

Rutgers has lost 27 straight Big Ten games and is 6-19 overall and 0-12 in conference play.
