‘The Big Short,’ ‘Spotlight’ win at Writers Guild awards

The Writers Guild of America held their awards show on Feb. 13, with simultaneous ceremonies at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Los Angeles and New York’s Edison Ballroom.

The Big Short, written by Charles Randolph and Adam McKay, won the Adapted Screenplay award. The film is based on Michael Lewis’ book and was released by Paramount. the film is expected to win the Oscar, especially after winning the BAFTA Award on Feb. 14. The Writers Guild’s adapted screenplay field included Aaron Sorkin for Steve Jobs and John McNamara for Trumbo, who both failed to earn Oscar nominations.

On the original screenplay side, Josh Singer and Tom McCarthy’s screenplay for Open Road’s Spotlight won. Spotlight also won the same award at the BAFTAs. Its competition at the WGA awards was a little bit different than the Oscar field. The Oscars nominated Inside Out by Pete Docter, Meg LeFauve and Josh Cooley and Alex Garland’s Ex Machina instead of Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck and Taylor Sheridan’s Sicario scripts.

Alex Gibney’s Going Clear won the documentary screenplay award.

On the TV side, Mad Men won Drama Series, Veep took home comedy and Mr. Robot was best new series. You can check out the other winners here.
