‘The X-Files’ recap S10E06: ‘My Struggle II’

On the season finale of The X-Files, Mulder and Scully try to save the world from the conspiracy that Tad O’Malley discovered.

Scully goes to Mulder’s office, but he’s not there. She finds his computer open to Tad O’Malley’s internet show. The phone rings. It’s Tad. He tells her she needs to come to Mulder’s apartment.

Mulder’s home is obviously the site of a struggle. Tad says the door was open. He also says a doctor has discovered he has altered DNA. Dana calls the police to find Mulder.

Scully tells Skinner and Agent Einstein that Mulder isn’t answering his phone. She says he probably fears her judgement for believing Tad that every American has alien DNA. Einstein thinks Scully is crazy for thinking the claims may be true.

Einstein and Scully go to the hospital where they find a man with a lesion on his arm. They direct a nurse to have him see a doctor immediately.

Mulder is driving. He has a black eye. Skinner tries to call him, but he doesn’t answer.

Scully takes Einstein’s blood to see if her DNA is altered. Scully tells her she found alien DNA in her own blood. She thinks the smallpox vaccination they received as children added something to their DNA that could be passed on genetically.

Agent Miller shows Scully a new episode of Tad’s show where he interviews a doctor who tells him that a variety of contagions will destroy people’s immune systems and kill them, starting with healthcare workers and police. Scully thinks it’s already happening.

Scully tells the earlier nurse that the man’s lesions are from anthrax. He’s military. Scully thinks it’s because of his vaccine. Scully says they’ll all be exposed to various contagions on a global scale.

Mulder wakes in his car and begins driving again. Scully tries to call him, but he lets it go to voicemail. He enters South Carolina.

Miller watches Tad’s newest show in Mulder’s office. He notices a phone finder program on the computer and clicks on it, discovering that Mulder is in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Einstein argues with Scully that her theory is wrong. She believes there is a more sensible explanation. She says that shutting down the immune system would require something being take away from the DNA, not added to it.

Scully gets a call from Agent Reyes who tells her the Smoking Man made her an offer a decade before that she couldn’t refuse. Badly burned and in the hospital, he called Reyes to his bedside and offered to spare her life when he depopulated the planet. Reyes tells Scully she’s protected by her alien DNA. She’s one of the chosen elite. She also says that the Smoking Man sent a man to Mulder to offer him a deal.

Flashback to a man coming into Mulder’s home. He and Mulder fight until eventually Mulder has him at a disadvantage. Mulder asks who sent him.

Now, Mulder puts a gun to the Smoking Man’s head. Smoking Man tells him he’s controlled him since before Mulder knew he existed. Mulder tells him to stop the epidemic. Smoking Man says it’s too late. He offers to save Mulder’s life, but Mulder won’t bend to his will. Mulder is sick. Smoking Man tells him he’s killing the majority of humans to save the planet.

Tad tells his viewers that anthrax is giving way to flu and bacterial diseases. He says the diseases are being set off by chem-trails. Hospitals are being overrun with dying people.

Scully tells Einstein she needs her help. She wants to make a vaccine with her alien DNA to save the sick from what they’re calling the Spartan virus. However, Scully’s blood test doesn’t show the altered DNA. The nurse comes in and tells Scully that the medical staff is all getting sick.

Tad tells his viewers that microwave radiation is also being used as a trigger and reports are starting to come in from Europe as well.

Scully tells Einstein that the Spartan virus destroys the gene from DNA that supports the immune system. They need to find a way to deactivate the protein the virus uses as a weapon. Einstein says their mistake was that the sample of Scully’s blood was too small.

Mulder has passed out from his illness in the Smoking Man’s lounge. Miller wakes him. Miller tells Smoking Man that he’s taking Mulder home. Smoking Man tells them they won’t get far.

Einstein is sick. They find the alien DNA in Scully’s sample. Einstein goes to lay down while Scully makes the cure.

Miller calls Scully to tell her he has Mulder. She tells him she can help them. Miller says there’s been a run on gas, so they may run out of road. She says she’ll find them wherever they are.

Scully gives the cure to Einstein and says Einstein will have to put IVs in all the other doctors.

Tad gives a report that the infrastructure is failing due to lack of people to operate them. He then announces that there is a vaccine and not to give up.

Scully stops a looter and tells everyone to get to the hospital. She gets in her SUV and drives down sidewalks to get to the highway where Miller and Mulder are. Miller gets out of the car so she can find them. When she does, she tells Miller that Mulder is too sick. The vaccine won’t help him. He needs stem cells from their son who is protected by her DNA. However, she has no idea where William is.

Suddenly, a spacecraft appears above them, shining a light on Scully, Miller, and Mulder. Then the screen goes black.
