Bennett Miller, Tom Stoppard making new ‘A Christmas Carol’ movie

Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is one of the most-often adapted stories in film history and it will get the Hollywood treatment again. Oscar nominee Bennett Miller and Oscar winner Tom Stoppard are teaming up for a new version.

The new version will be a period piece set in the 19th century, when the original story was published. Although Miller’s movies have all been set years before they were made, this is the first time the director is going that far back in time.

Miller’s film will be made by Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures, reports The Hollywood Reporter. Producers are Scott Rudin, Jennifer Fox, Ellison and Miller.

A Christmas Carol is the well-known story of Ebeneezer Scrooge, who learns the true meaning of Christmas after a visit from the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future. The most recent big-budget version was Robert Zemeckis’ 2009 motion capture movie, which made $325 million worldwide.

Miller’s three feature films - Capote, Moneyball and Foxcatcher - have all won acclaim. Capote and Foxcatcher earned him Best Director Oscar nominations. A Christmas Carol would be his first fictional film.

Stoppard is a prolific British screenwriter and playwright, earning the Best Original Screenplay Oscar for 1998’s Shakespeare In Love. He wrote the upcoming Tulip Fever with Alicia Vikander.
