Listeria concerns prompt Whole Foods to recall Maytag blue cheese

The upscale grocery chain Whole Foods announced that it has recalled Maytag blue cheese over listeria concerns.

The Consumerist noted that the company voluntarily pulled Maytag Raw Milk Blue Cheese from its shelves and is advising customers who purchased the product to discard it immediately.

CNBC reported that Whole Foods said the particular blue cheese may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, although it has not been notified of any illnesses at this time.

“Out of an abundance of caution, Whole Foods Market is recalling the products from all of its stores nationwide,” a company statement on March 1 read.

The PLU number is 293308 and the item has a sell by date of 1/20/2016 to 3/21/16.

If you purchased the product you can bring your receipt to the store where you bought it for a full refund. Any customers with additional questions are asked to call 512-477-5566, extension 20060, Monday through Friday.

Listeria symptoms can include high fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. The most vulnerable to the illness are the elderly, infants, pregnant woman and those with compromised immune systems.
