Showtime to produce documentary on Whitney Houston

Showtime has announced plans to produce a documentary on the life and career of late music superstar Whitney Houston.

Showtime Documentary Films made the announcement in a press release on March 15.  BAFTA award winning filmmaker, Nick Broomfield, will produce, narrate and direct the film. Broomfield gained notoriety for the film Kurt and Courtney about Nirvana lead-singer Kurt Cobain and his wife Courtney Love. The film, released in 1998, garnered controversy for asserting that Love had a role in her husband's death in 1994.

According to the press release, the documentary will explore Houston's life and career, including her untimely death in 2012. Vinnie Malhotra,  Senior Vice President, Documentary and Unscripted Programming for Showtime Networks Inc. had this to say about the project and its director Nick Broomfield, “Nick is a bold storyteller with an acclaimed track record of provocative documentary filmmaking. Showtime Documentary Films is thrilled to partner with him on this project.”

According to Deadline, the film has been in development for over a year and British television broadcasting company BBC has already acquired UK rights to the film. As of now, the project does not  have a title, but Showtime says the film will be shot in Los Angeles and include behind the scenes footage from Houston's career in addition to interviews with people close to Houston. The press release did not reveal a release date for the film.
