‘The Nightly Show’ recap: ‘Arianna Huffington’

As per usual, May 25’s episode of The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore opened with a short news segment to reel the audience in. A CNN report had covered recent protests occurring concurrent to his rallies. His twitter, however, appeared oblivious to these protests, with Trump tweeting out how great his rallies seemed to be going. Wilmore’s main focus of the clip, however, was a particularly raunchy reply tweet CNN had included underneath, much to Wilmore’s delight. He saluted the account and began the show.

Transitioning, Wilmore introduced a new segment to the show: Larry Does Lines. After a brief and comedic comment to the producers about the title card suggesting that he does cocaine, Wilmore clarified that he was referring to airport lines. According to news reports, airport lines were longer than they had ever been, with a TSA official even being fired as a consequence of the issue. However, instead of fixing the actual problem, airport officials were attempting to alleviate the situation by providing entertainment to flyers waiting in line. Denver was handing out candy, Atlanta provided musical numbers and snacks, San Diego hired a clown and Cincinnati brought in therapy ponies.

After stating that the gestures were just a pathetic attempt to draw attention away from the real issue, the show cut to a skit, featuring tsa agent “Ron Thursday,” aka Mike Yard. Yard posed as a tsa agent and producer during the skit, consistently bringing in various forms of entertainment instead of answering Wilmore’s questions. In faux frustration, Wilmore closed out the segment.

After the break, Wilmore returned to another Larry Does Lines segment. This time, he covered a different type of line causing issue in the United States: the health care lines for American veterans. In an awkward comparison on live television, secretary McDonald had compared waiting in line for health care to waiting in line at Disney. To make it worse, when Fox covered the story, the anchor had defended Disney in his interpretation, instead of the veterans. Wilmore remained adamant that the comparison was the most insulting to veterans, bringing two army veterans and contributors on the show to discuss the issue further.

The night’s panel included The Nightly Show contributors Franchesca Ramsey, Ricky Velez and special guest, Arianna Huffington.

The discussion centered on a recent trend of conservative and controversial speakers getting disinvited from to colleges. The panelists discussed why they believed this was happening, whether the college subculture played into the issue, the difference of not being invited versus being disinvited and how the act infringed on freedom of speech. Eventually, the group came to the agreement that while critiquing a speaker was acceptable, denying their right to speak was not. More serious than usual, the night's panel still concluded on an amiable note.
