'The Ride’ by Catfish and the Bottlemen album review

On May 27, Catfish and the Bottlemen released their new album, titled The Ride, on Capitol Records. The LP is an impressive sophomore effort from an exciting young band who truly embody rock and roll.

When I first discovered Catfish and the Bottlemen in a sea of new music, I found singer Van McCann’s voice to be similar to the Kooks’ vocalist, Luke Pritchard. As their music has moved on, though, McCann has shown he has his own decidedly harder nuances giving his band a piece of their unique sound. His voice is equally suited to rock songs like “Twice” or ballads such as “Heathrow.”

The Ride is full of happy, infectious drum beats. You can’t help but dance to this album. This is especially evident on opening tune, “7,” but easily continues throughout the record. In addition to an awesome drummer, their guitarist also has chops, as heard in the licks featured on “Red.”

Catfish and the Bottlemen’s lyrics revolve around relationships, booze, cigarettes and touring in typical rock star style. Having started their band at such a young age, this is what their life seemingly comprises of. Fans aren’t sure whether to be envious or glad to avoid the apparent heartaches.

The album ends on a high note. “Outside” is in turns beautiful and pulse-pounding. The sound moves between heavy and light with ease and ends abruptly, leaving us wanting more.

Overall, this album has a yearning feel and it more than lives up to their debut. If you’re a fan of indie/rock and roll, these guys will make you happy. Just put on the album and dance your worries away.
