‘Me Before You’ Blu-ray movie review

Me Before You is a quirky movie full of emotion and laughter. Warner Home Video released the movie on Blu-ray and DVD on Aug. 30. While the movie makes everything seem beautiful, those who have issues with suicide topics might look elsewhere for entertainment.

Me Before You posterThis is the story of funny Louisa “Lou” Clark who moves from job to job to support her family. After losing her job at a bakery, she takes a companion position in desperation. She’s to keep company with a wealthy paralyzed banker named Will Traynor with a cynical outlook on life. As she starts to show him the beauty of life, she learns that he’s resolved to have an assisted suicide in Switzerland in less than six months. Can she change his mind as they fall for each other? And which of them will be more changed by their union?

I went into this movie expecting a cheesy romance between a naïve girl and a wealthy grouch of a man who happened to be in a wheelchair. A “could she see past his shortcomings and glimpse the man within” type of thing. That is not what this movie is. I mean, if you want to get technical, it has that outline, but the story is so much more. Lou is a fun and sincere person. She has a cheerful outlook and doesn’t let anything bring her down. She’s quick with a joke and a smile. The movie is genuinely funny. As Will opens up, we see his sense of humor as well. As they learn more about each other, we can see that they’re suitably matched. It’s not an instant romance. It’s a believable one.

As the story went on, it moved me to tears. Lou wore her emotions on her sleeve and I could feel them from my side of the screen. What will she decide to do about Will? The decision may upset some movie goers, so I suggest anyone who has been touched by suicide be wary about watching this film.

I went into this movie expecting it to be a 2, but came out of it rating it a 4 of 5 stars. I’m not a Nick Sparks kind of girl, but give me a quirky awkward genuine romance any day. If that’s what you veer towards too, this movie just might be for you.
