‘Sully’ is the new box office champion

Tom Hanks returned to the top spot at the box office this weekend as his new movie, Sully, brought in $35.5 million.

The film had the fifth largest September opening weekend of all time reports Box Office Mojo. It has received excellent reviews and I’m expecting it to gross well over $100 million.

Second place went to another new release, the thriller titled When the Bough Breaks, which grossed $15.5 million. Don’t Breathe dropped to third place this weekend with $8.2 million and is closing in on $70 million domestically. Suicide Squad was fourth this weekend with $5.7 and is now over $307 million domestically after 38 days of release.

The new animated flick The Wild Life rounds out the top five with $3.4 million and it looks like this film is going to struggle to find an audience. The horror thriller The Disappointments Room had a very poor debut coming in 17th place and only grossing $1.4 million. It doesn't even look like this film will gross $10 million.

I predict Sully will retain the top spot at the box office next weekend even though it will face competition from four upcoming new releases.
