‘Gotham’ recap: ‘Mad City: Follow the White Rabbit’

It is a beautiful morning in Gotham City as a young couple is celebrating their wedding day. The day soon becomes dark for them though as they get into their limo and Jervis is their driver. He tells them that their fate is in James Gordon’s hands. He has kidnapped them and a young boy. The Mad Hatter is back!

Jim and Valerie are having coffee while she continues to ask Jim to try and arrange a sit-down with Leslie about Alice Tech’s blood. They go back and forth and you wonder if they will become exclusive sometime soon. A strange man dressed in white approaches Jim and has a message from Jervis. Jim answers a payphone where Jervis tells Jim he must make a choice. He must choose to save the life of a young boy in the street or the married couple about to jump off the roof. Jim rushes to save the young boy but watches in horror as the married couple fall to their deaths.

Oswald is enjoying his breakfast and is telling his maid, Olga, that he is ready to confess his true feelings of love for Edward. He wants to feel something human and intimate. Chief of Staff Edward is hard at work and he gives Oswald his duties as Mayor and as King of the Underworld. Oswald can’t quite gain the courage to tell Edward his feelings just yet.

Jim goes back to the payphone and Jervis gives him the address 87 Fulton Street. Jim is now trapped in the middle of Jervis’ game. Jim arrives at the address and notices articles about his family on the wall. He receives another call from Jervis and he continues to tease him and even upsets him by bringing up Alice. Jim then notices that Jervis has kidnapped Valerie.

Barbara and Tabitha are enjoying a drink at the club. They discuss about hiding Butch when an angry Jim shows up. He wants to know where Jervis is. Barbara claims she doesn’t know, but that Jervis came in a few days earlier asking about Jim’s relationships over the years. Jim immediately goes and calls Leslie but Jervis answers. He gives him yet another address. Jim realizes that Jervis now has Leslie and Valerie.

Bullock and Barnes notice the man in white and bring him to GCPD. Barnes’ interrogation isn’t working and he is very close to losing it when Bullock tells him they know where Jim is going. Jim arrives at Gotham Water & Power for the second act of Jervis’ game. He must make another choice. He must choose to save the life of a news anchor or a pediatrician. Jim refuses to choose as Bullock and GCPD arrive. Jim doesn’t choose so Jervis decides to electrocute them both. The Mad Hatter continues his mind games.

Leslie and Valerie are trapped inside Leslie’s bathroom. Valerie (being the reporter she is) continues to ask Leslie about Alice Tech’s blood. It looks like Valerie is getting that sit-down with Leslie after all. “You and Jim were made for each other,” she says to Valerie. Meanwhile, Oswald is performing his mayoral duties and visiting a local school. He notices a boy playing by himself and perhaps it reminds him a bit of himself when he was young. He encourages the boy to play with the other kids. He then tells Edward he would like to have dinner with him to discuss something important. Will Oswald finally tell Edward his true feelings?

Barnes is giving GCPD a pep talk to find Leslie and Valerie. Jim notices the man in white in a holding cell and Jim asks him how to get to the end of the game. Jim finds out he has been invited to a tea party at Leslie’s house. Mario stops him and tries to talk to him. Jim then brings him along for help.

Jim walks inside Leslie’s house and finds Jervis, Leslie and Valerie sitting at the table. Mario sneaks into the basement and finds a gun. The tea party has begun and Jervis is telling everyone the story about his sister and how Jim turned her against him and then killed her. Jervis tells Jim the woman he loves is going to die. He compares the two women and is going to make Jim choose. Mario sneaks up behind Jervis with his gun drawn, but Jervis is one step ahead and has replaced the mag in Mario’s gun. Jim then tries to turn the tables on Jervis by constantly bringing up his sister and trying to break him down. Jim offers himself instead of the women but Jervis refuses and gives him to the count of three to pick which one Jervis is going to kill. Jim whispers “Kill Lee,” and then Jervis realizes he loves Valerie and shoots her in the stomach. Jervis tells Jim he has become the villain. Jervis escapes yet again as Jim and Leslie tend to the wounded Valerie.

Oswald is preparing what he is going to say to Edward during their special dinner tonight. He is ready to confess his true feelings. Meanwhile, Edward is buying a nice bottle of wine when meets a woman named Isabella who looks exactly like Miss Kringle. She tells him a riddle and he looks in awe. I’m pretty confident Edward just found his soulmate.

Valerie has been rushed to the hospital and is in surgery. Bullock tells Jim that the entire department is looking for Jervis and Jim is feeling guilty about all of this. He feels that Jervis has won since he gave into his game. Jim goes and sits next to Leslie and is going to apologize for what he said but she cuts him off. They sit in silence next to each other…
