'Breakfast'- album review for 'The Voice' alum Emily Keener

Season 10 The Voice alum Emily Keener released her first album since the show, Breakfast, on Nov. 17. Having finished the show this spring, Keener has wasted no time creating new music that will keep her newfound fans addicted to her genuine style. At only 17 years old, Keener’s music has an airy sophistication that surpasses her age by far.

Keener’s songs all have a personal element; her music is believable and untouched by the influence of an overly involved label. Her authenticity is refreshing and imaginative, making her music enjoyable for all ages, not only those in her age range.

Keener can be descried as folk pop. She has a deep voice that occasionally yodels and she carries low and high notes equally well. “Lorelei” is a well-balanced up-tempo song with fluttering vocals that skip and somersault over persistent strumming and grounded percussion.

“Light & Sound” has a more built up, pop production and Keener moves her vocals around with a drifty edge. “What We’re About” allows Keener to explore a darker side to her voice that perks up with a jazzy chorus.

“Pretend” is a shadowy and emotional love song with light, distressed production. “Elevator” is a call for independence with an early Kelly Clarkson vibe.

Breakfast is a consistent album with songs that flow perfectly together. Though each track contains similar elements, they are individual enough to keep the album interesting the whole way through. With her acute sense and passion for music, Breakfast is sure to only be the first of many meals we share with Keener.
