The Shins 'Dead Alive' single review

The Shins are one of the most prominent rock bands to make it out of the ‘90s with a devoted following, and for good reason. On Oct. 26 they released “Dead Alive,” the first single off their first album since 2012, due out in 2017. The single is a welcome surprise as it combines The Shins’ upbeat aura with an ominous tone, but is consistent with the same intricate instrumentation we've to expect from them.

“Dead Alive” is an eerie song from the lyrics down to the keys. It is reminiscent of the more atmospheric work by The Beatles with a slight witchy tone.

Mercer’s vocals hold up with ‘70s pop rock greats. He effortlessly swings us through a carnival of surreal images. The chorus is comprised of the simple message “So tonight/Dance and cry/The dead alive”. Richard Swift’s keyboards give the most effort toward the creepy theme of “Dead Alive”. He introduces the song with a quick Dracula-esque riff that is echoed by a funky bass line from Yuuki Matthews. Mark Watrous and Joe Plummer keep the song grounded with hefty rhythm on the guitar and drums, respectively. Their sturdiness allows the other members to play around and experiment with this alternate dimension they have created.

“Dead Alive” reinforces the fact that The Shins aren’t afraid to experiment with their sound. After being around for nearly two decades, they know how to mix things up and keep their fans interested and on their toes. “Dead Alive” is an exciting introduction to The Shins’ next album that this single has ensured will have anticipation surrounding it for months to come.
