New trailer for Heath Ledger documentary released (Video)

Today, April 4, would have been actor Heath Ledger's 38th birthday.  To honor the star, 9 years after his tragic death of a drug overdose in 2008, Spike TV has decided to release a new trailer for a new documentary which captures the life of the talented Australian actor that was cut way too short.

The documentary, titled I Am Heath Ledger, is made by filmmaker Derik Murray, who also made the Spike documentary about Chris Farley, similarly titled I Am Chris Farley.

This documentary will show never-before-seen home videos shot by Ledger himself.  The footage is appropriate because, according to his childhood friend Trevor DiCarlo, Ledger was "always meant to be a director."

The film will cover Ledger's entire life and career, including his incredible turns in Brokeback Mountain and The Dark Knight.  Stars like actress Naomi Watts and director Ang Lee will appear in the documentary, as well as some of Ledger's family and friends.

This is not the first time Ledger has been the focus of a documentary.  The Netflix series Too Young to Die, featured an episode on the 10 Things I Hate About You star.  The episode showed his father, Kim Ledger, as he went through pages of his son's diary that he kept while he was in character as the Joker for The Dark Knight, as reported by Entertainment Weekly.

I Am Heath Ledger will have its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 23.  It will then hit select theaters on May 3.  After that, the film will have its world television premiere on Spike TV on Wednesday, May 17 at 10 p.m. ET.  Finally, the film will be released on DVD and digital platforms on May 23.
