'Bachelor' couple Ben Higgins and Lauren Bushnell call it quits

Another Bachelor couple has decided to end their engagement leaving fans who had hoped for Ben Higgins and Lauren Bushnell to live happily ever after wondering what went wrong.

The couple, who fell for each other on the reality dating show, confirmed on Monday that they have called it quits.

"It is with heavy hearts that we announce our decision to go our separate ways," the 29-year-old Higgins and 27-year-old Bushenll said in a joint statement to People. "We feel fortunate for the time we had together, and will remain friends with much love and respect for one another. We wish nothing but the best for each other, and ask for your support and understanding at this time."

The couple met on Higgins' season of The Bachelor in 2016 and following that went on to star in a spinoff  titled Ben & Lauren: Happily Ever After? Rumblings though about trouble in their relationship surfaced last January but the pair maintained things were still good between them with Higgins saying of Bushnell, "I am still extremely lucky to be able to share life with her and be by her side."

So what went wrong? Well one source close to Lauren told E! News that "They just wanted different things. They had been struggling for a while ... It was a mutual break up for the most part. I think Ben would have kept wanting to make it work, though. It's really sad. They're both such great people, honestly."
