Jimmy Kimmel back on late night show, gives update on son's health (Video)

Jimmy Kimmel returned to his late night talk show on Monday, May 8 and gave viewers an update on his newborn son's health and hit back at his critics.

The comedian began his show with the good news that little Billy is doing much better after his heart surgery.

"Our son Billy is doing very well. He's eating, he's getting bigger, he's sleeping well," Kimmel shared, before joking that "He can read now, which they say is unusual for his age."

As we reported, Kimmel revealed last week in an emotional monologue that he and Molly McNearney's son had undergone the surgery just a few days after he was born for a congenital heart defect called Tetralogy of Fallot with pulmonary atresia. Video of that monologue went viral and has since been seen over 10,000,000 times.

The 49-year-old then made a plea about maintaining health insurance coverage for Americans with pre-existing conditions and he had some critics who were unhappy with his public remarks on that subject. Kimmel fired back at those critics in true late night host fashion by tying it into a joke.

“I cannot count the number of times I’ve been called an ‘out of touch Hollywood elitist creep’ this week, which I have to say I kind of appreciate," Kimmel cracked. "I would like to apologize for saying that children in America should have health care. It was insensitive. It was offensive and I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me."

He also called out Newt Gingrich specifically since the former speaker of the house said that doctors at a hospital would not deny anyone help and would do everything to try and save someone's life no matter if they have insurance or not.

"Yes, it is true that if you have an emergency, they will do an operation," Kimmel said. "And that’s terrific if your baby’s health problems are all solved during that one visit. The only problem is that never, ever happens. We’ve had a dozen doctors appointments since our son had surgery. You’ve got a cardiologist, the pediatrician, surgeon, some kids need an ambulance to transport them. That doesn’t even count the parents who have to miss work for all this stuff. Those details, Newt forgot to mention. I don’t know if the double layers of Spanx are restricting the blood flow to his brain.”

Kimmel then cracked a few more jokes about Gingrich. You can see his entire monologue below:
