2017 MTV Video Music Awards recap and complete winners list

VMA, 5th Harmony

If you missed a moment of the VMA awards held last night at The Forum in Inglewood, California, with host Katy Perry you missed some amazing performances, some of which we didn’t get to see, as well as major shade throwing.

Starting off with the positive, the performances by everyone, including a flu-infested Lorde were all amazing. Check out our list here to catch up further.

However, while it was heartbreaking when MTV cut off Julia Michaels – who was neck and neck with Khalid all night for Best New Artist – it ws even more devastating when the station chose to go to commercial break during the Linkin Park tribute to Chester Bennington, who committed suicide last month. This was right after Jared Leto told everyone he had all night to wait for them to get up and applaud Bennington’s career. So that happened.

Then there was the shade throwing. Katy Perry, who was really not a good host, was doing a lot of subtle slinging. The rift between Perry and Taylor Swift reared it’s ugly head many times during the night. When it came to throwing major shade, 5th Harmony was at the top of their game. They began their performance with five people on the stage only to have one tossed off rather violently. There is blatant hatred for former member Camilla, but damn, that was a bitch move ladies.

And the shade wasn’t just from inside the venue. Adam Levine was on Twitter tossing it around:

And the night wouldn’t be complete without mentioning DNCE’s front man’s ’70s porn star look. Sorry Joe, when Rod Stewart looks better than you, it’s bad.

But there was a lot of good stuff mixed in. Three of the most amazing moments of the night were absolute tear-jerkers.

First was the announcement from Charlottesville, Va. victim Heather Heyer’s mom that she was starting a new foundation in her daughter’s name.

The next was Pink’s speech after receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, presented by Ellen DeGeneres, where she discussed how her daughter came to her saying she looked like a boy with long hair. The mom handled it so well her reaction should be played in every elementary school in the U.S.

Finally, with the recent suicides in the music community Logic, along with Alessia Cara and Khalid performed “1-800-273-8255” and talked about suicide awareness. Logic made an impassioned speech that depression, anxiety and other psychological disorders know no color, no gender, no religion.

The VMAs are notorious for being poorly produced and way too over top, but overall, this year offered a lot of great moments to talk about. And that includes the winners! Kendrick Lamar killed it bringing home the moon men last night. Song of summer went to Lil Uzi Vert and everyone nominated for Fight Against the System won.
