You go Glen Coco! ‘Mean Girls’ is headed to Broadway

Mean Girls

That’s right, the 2004 comedy smash hit Mean Girls is being turned into a Broadway musical. Raise your hands if this is the announcement you’ve been waiting for.

So fetch! The musical will open on April 8 of 2018 at the August Wilson Theatre. Prior to the Broadway release, the show will have a trial-run in Washington D.C. at D.C.’s National Theater on October 31.

Tina Fey, writer of the original film in what was the first feature film she ever wrote for, has been working on a stage adaption of Mean Girls for the past five years. It is being co-written by Fey’s husband Jeff Richmond, who was also a composer on 30 Rock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Fey said “The great thing about music is it lets you get in people’s heads and inside their emotional lives in a way that you can do with a tight close-up in movies, but it’s so much bigger and warmer [in a musical]. I think fans will hopefully find that this has the DNA of the movie and is true to the spirit of it, but is also opened up in a lot of ways.”

What the actual music itself will consist of remains to be seen. Admittedly, we’re having a hard time picturing the character of Regina George busting into a song and dance solo routine, but Broadway has adapted non-musical films into hits countless times — including adaptations from Silence of the Lambs, Groundhog Day and Shrek.

Along with the short video from Fey came a poster:

The play is being directed by Casey Nicholaw — choreographer of other broadway hits such as 2005’s Monty Python’s Spamalot and 2011’s The Book of MormonThe cast includes Erika Henningsen taking on Lindsay Lohan’s role of Cady Heron, Taylor Louderman as Regina George, Ashley Park as Gretchen Wieners and Kate Rockwell as Karen Smith.

Tickets may be hard to come by in its opening weeks. Our recommendation? You could try Sears.

The fella over there with the hella good hair. Movies and TV are my jam, and the fact that I get to write about them on a regular basis is the bees knees.
