The first trailer for the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot, starring Alicia Vikander as the video-game icon Lara Croft, has been released. Watch it here:

Along with the trailer came a few new posters, which dropped just a few days prior:

We, and the rest of the internet, are having a tough time deciding how to gauge this one. On one hand, the trailer isn’t bad and definitely captures that Indiana Jones type of vibe that the games are known for. It’s also being directed by Roar Uthaug, who’s done great work in the indie market with films like The Wave and Escape.

On the other hand, we can’t ignore the previous track record of films adapted from video games. You’d be hard-pressed to find one that turned out average, let alone good, as most of them — such as Assassin’s Creed, Resident Evil, Max Payne and that nearly unmentionable Super Mario Bros. movie (seriously, what was that?) — range from unsatisfactory to down-right terrible.

Still, this new re-incarnation has a chance to break the spell, at least. Casting Vikander as the lead is a smart move and she seems to embody Lara Croft in the trailer. She’s  also accompanied by a solid supporting cast including Walton Goggins (The Hateful Eight), Daniel Wu, Dominic West and Hannah John-Kamen.

Fans online have already begun to compare the trailer to the previous Tomb Raider films — Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003) — which saw Angelina Jolie play the title character. While these two films didn’t get great critical reception upon their initial release, apparently people are remembering Jolie’s interpretation of Croft with fond memories:

All we can do now is wait to see how it actually turns out. Tomb Raider is set to be released on March 16, 2018. Let us know what you thought of the trailer in the comments below.
