Tyler Perry — most commonly known for his Madea films — announced that he would be donating $1 million to Hurricane Harvey relief after the massive destruction that took place in Texas.

He took to his Facebook to say:

Joel Osteen, Beyonce, Hurricane Harvey and Giving

“In the past, I have given millions and millions of dollars to charities and I was really disheartened to find out that the money I had given didn’t actually get to the people,” Perry says. “So what I was looking for were people who were boots on the ground.”

Part of the money — $250,000 to be exact — will be going to Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church. This decision is a rather controversial one as Osteen has recently been criticized for not opening up his church as a sanctuary for those in need until several days after the damage hit, despite having tweeted this a couple of days prior:

Perry said: “I know that there’s been some controversy about Joel Osteen and him not opening the doors of the church. Joel and Victoria are amazing people.”

The actor had spoken to the Olsteens on the phone and worked out all concerns about where his money would go.

Another portion of Perry’s money is also going to Rudy Rasmus — mostly known for being Beyoncé’s pastor, and is also aiding the hurricane relief.

Perry joins the list of many celebrities have been pledging large donations to victims of Hurricane Harvey, which you can read here.
