This is not really surprising — 2017 was a highly political year, which renewed public light on long-standing and hard-fought crusades for social justice. A testament to the power of this year’s nominees, this climate is apparent in the art. As the incomparable Nina Simone said, “You can’t help it. An artist’s duty, as far as I’m concerned, is to reflect the times.” Happily, we see that in action here.
