Trailers by Brandon: Steven Soderbergh is making movies again and the 'Gnomes' cinematic universe is now a thing

Sad story: I spent all Thursday getting excited to go see Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs in theaters that night, only to eventually realize it was only getting a limited release this week and won’t be in a theater near me until April. Still a little bitter about it. Anyways, here’s what we got for this week’s Trailers by Brandon.

Opening this week:

Pacific Rim: Uprising

It’s weird that we live in a world where we have two franchises that are about giant robots punching each other, and it’s even weirder that Pacific Rim is the better of the two even though it’s still only kind of average. Yet, here we are. The sequel, directed by Steven S. DeKnight of Marvel’s Daredevil, more or less the same as the first — robots and monsters fighting. ‘Nuff said.

Unsane

Hey guys, remember when Steven Soderbergh told us he was retiring from Hollywood forever? Yeah, that was only like a couple years ago and he’s already made two movies since then. What gives? Still, Logan Lucky was good and Unsane looks creepy and atmospheric and all. Then there’s the fact that the whole movie was shot on an iPhone, because, ya know, Soderbergh just likes to be weird (and slightly pretentious).

Sherlock Gnomes

I’m sorry, was there anyone out there who actually went to see the first Gnome movie, or whatever this franchise is going by? Genuine question because I know I haven’t and am a little baffled at how a sequel got green-lit. We just live in a world where gnomes can become an extended universe, I guess.

Midnight Sun

It seems like there’s a new release every week that you couldn’t pay me to see. Last week was I Can Only Imagine, this year it’s Midnight Sun — an over-the-top romance about a girl who’s allergic to the sun. It’s a real and disease at all, but can’t she just tell this guy?? Like I never knew that was such a deal breaker in a relationship?? Hard pass on this one.

New trailers:

Deadpool 2 (May 18, 2018)

Yes yes yes yes. The Deadpool trailer we’ve all been waiting for. Look, Wade Wilson’s Bob Ross meta-humor is funny and all, but at the end of the day we still want to be re-assured that Deadpool 2 will actually be a good movie. This trailer did that and more. We’re getting our first look at the X-Force, Zazie Beetz and Josh Brolin look great as Domino and Cable, and that kid from Hunt for the Wilderpeople is back and looking hilarious. Everything looks pretty on point with the first Deadpool here, let’s just hope we can stick the landing.

Under the Silver Lake (June 22, 2018)

Sign me up for anything A24. Sign me up for anything directed by David Robert Mitchell. So, basically, sign me up for Under the Silver Lake. It’s a weird, weird trailer and I have a feeling that we might not love Andrew Garfield’s character by the end of it, but I really can’t wait to see what kind of ride this one takes us on.

Tag (June 15, 2018)

Okay, Tag might sound like kind of a dumb concept for a movie at first, but the more you read into this story the better and better it starts to sound. There really was a group of friends in their thirties who played a competitive game of Tag like this for 23 whole years. That’s insane. Not only that, but the trailer is actually, like, really funny? All of Hannibal Buress’ lines were cracking me up, along with Jake Johnson, Ed Helms, Jeremy Renner, Jon Hamm and Islae Fisher. This might just be the breakout comedy of the summer.

The Spy Who Dumped Me (August 3, 2018)

Lol but this one sure won’t be, at least judging from the trailer. Do they know they’re basing the title of their movie off of Austin Powers — a movie that, in itself, is spoofing the spy genre? Is this supposed to be a meta spoof of a spoof or something? Or is just a poorly thought out title with an even more poorly thought out trailer? Something tells me it’s the latter of those two.

The Titan (March 30, 2018)

I’ve officially given up on watching all Netflix-original movies. Mute broke me down, which is why I skipped The Outsider. Now I’m just going to wait to hear the buzz about a film before I watch it because I really can’t take another Cloverfield Paradox. All of this just to say that who knows how The Titan will turn out. It looks like a mix of Interstellar and Prometheus, only with America’s blandest actor — Sam Worthington — thrown in there. I don’t know, maybe it’ll be good, but I’m waiting to hear that from other people first.

Action Point (June 1, 2018)

This one may appeal to all the Johnny Knoxville fans out there, I guess? Are there still any Johnny Knoxville fans still out there? Or is this just a desperate attempt trying to capitalize on his Jackass fame, only this time throwing some sort of lose (and not very quality looking) narrative around the whole thing? Once again, I’m going with the latter.

Come Sunday (April 13, 2018)

Okay, I know I JUST said I was done watching Netflix-original movies until I hear some buzz about them, but I’m revoking that after watching the trailer to Come Sunday. This looks great. Like, throw Chiwetel Ejiofor in the awards race level of great.

Rewind pick:

Tangerine (2015)

Steven Soderbergh is cool for wanting to pave new waves of filmmaking and all that, but make no mistake — he's not the first person to make a film entirely shot on an iPhone. Sean Baker (who also made The Florida Projectwhich was my favorite movie of last year) did it back in 2015 with Tangerineand it's nothing short of a master-piece. Following two pimps in Hollywood, Tangerine is a very real tale with some comedic elements and a whole lot of heart.
