From humble beginnings to YouTube celebrity

Casey Neistat is a once dishwasher turned into a filmmaker and YouTube powerhouse.

Neistat is an American YouTuber nominated for Creator of the Decade at this year's Shorty Awards. Rightfully so, too, because he has made hundreds of short films and videos that reach his over 9 million subscribers.

Neistat's bread and butter is his clever editing and creative cinematography. No matter what video he's uploading, whether it's a daily vlog or a bigger project, Neistat doesn't rest until his product matches his vision.

Throughout his career, the creator has been behind multiple influential film projects. Several of these projects have sparked important discussion on issues that were often ignored.

One of the first short films that brought him attention was iPod's Dirty Secret which pointed a spotlight on Apple's policy of not replacing expired iPod batteries. The video had a large amount of media coverage and caused Apple to announce a battery replacement policy and an extended warranty program.

It showed his skill of presenting an issue of interest in a digestible and easy to understand format. It reached over six million views, and this was before YouTube was even launched.

Another popular project was Bike LanesAfter getting fined $50 by a New York City officer for not riding his bicycle in the bike lane, Neistat decided to once again turn a spotlight on the issue.

His point was that the bike lanes are often blocked or obstructed by other hazards in the city, making it impractical to always use the bike lane. To prove his point he followed the officer's directions: always stay in the bike lane. As you can see in the video, though, that leads to a lot of falling over.

Another notable project is Make It Count. Neistat was hired by Nike to make a short film defining how to 'make it count.' He spent 10 days simply traveling the world and recording every amazing moment.

Neistat has now turned his editing skills into a YouTube career. He took a hiatus from his daily vlogs but has now relaunched the series, calling it 368 after the address for his production building in New York.

He has huge goals for his new series. Not only will he have a separate podcast, recording, and editing studios, but he aims to make 368 a creative hub. Nesitat hopes that YouTube creators from all over the world can use his centralized New York hub to visit, hang out, and create.
