Shame star Nicole Beharie is poised to be one of the next crop of talented African-American actresses in Hollywood. The Juilliard graduate made her debut in the 2008 film American Violet, where she displayed impressive acting skills and natural refinement. The harrowing film depicted a young single mother in her early 20s who was falsely arrested for drug dealing in Texas.
According to Wikipedia, Beharie was born in West Palm Beach, Florida on January 3, 1985 to a Nigerian father and Jamaican mother. She was raised in a distinguished family that exposed her to an international life. Her father was in the foreign service and she recalls moving to West Africa, Nigeria, and other countries. Her love of acting began as a child where she would put on plays at home with her younger brother.
Beharie attended the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities before enrolling at Juilliard in New York on a Robin Williams Scholarship. Her acting ability made her the top choice for the scholarship by the drama department.
Her next film is the Jackie Robinson biopic 42.
