Tom Cruise

Born: July 3, 1962
Birthplace: Syracuse, New York

Tom Cruise is an Oscar-nominated actor who has been one of the most popular and highest-paid actors for over three decades.

He got his start in the early '80s with films like The Outsiders and Risky Business before reaching new heights (literally) with Top Gun and The Color of Money. He starred alongside Dustin Hoffman in the Oscar-winner Rain Man and earned his first Oscar-nomination for Oliver Stone's Born on the Fourth of July.

The hits kept coming in the 1990s with Mission: Impossible and Jerry Maguire. In 1999, he starred in Stanley Kubrick's final film, Eyes Wide Shut, along with his then-wife Nicole Kidman. As he headed into the new century, he bounced between big hits and flops, continuing the Mission: Impossible franchise. In 2011, the franchise's fourth film, Ghost Protocol, became a blockbuster hit, solidifying his status as one of the most popular actors in the world.

Cruise is also the most famous follower of the Church of Scientology. He has been married three times and each has ended in divorce. In June 2012, Katie Holmes filed for divorce, and less than two weeks later they reached a settlement.

His next film is Jack Reacher.
