Kiefer Sutherland
Kiefer William Frederick Dempsey George Rufus Sutherland was born on Dec. 21, 1966 in London, England. His parents are actor Donald Sutherland and Shirley Douglas. Sutherland has a twin sister named Rachel.
Shortly after Sutherland's birth the family moved to Los Angeles, California. His parents divorced in 1970. In 1976, Sutherland moved with his mother to Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Sutherland attended high school at St. Andrew’s College as well as Martingrove Collegiate Institute and the Malvern Collegiate Institute.
At 15 years old, Sutherland turned to acting where he performed at various youth theatres around Toronto. In 1984, he landed his first starring role in “The By Boy.” For his performance, he was nominated for a Genie Award, which is the equivalent of an Academy Award in Canada.
The late 1980s were good to Sutherland as he starred in the coming-of-age movie “Stand By ME,” which also starred the late River Phoenix, Corey Feldman and Wil Wheaton. Sutherland also appeared as the head vampire in 1987’s “The Lost Boys.” 1988 saw Sutherland starring with Emilio Estevez and Charlie Sheen in “Young Guns.” In 1988, he starred with Jennifer Connelly in “Dark City.”
In 1992, Sutherland starred with Tom Cruise, Demi Moore, Kevin Bacon and Jack Nicholson in “A Few Good Men,” playing Lieutenant Jonathan James Kendrick. He followed up with 1993’s “Three Musketeers,” co-starring with Charlie Sheen, Chris O’Donnell and Oliver Platt. That same year, he made his directorial debut with the made-for-television drama, “Last Light.” It was nominated for several Cable Ace Awards.
Sutherland took a break from Hollywood for much of the 1990s. He spent his time perfecting his rodeo skills in Montana. He purchased the horses he rode while filming “Young Guns” and “Young Guns II.” His skill improved so much that he even won first place in the 1998 U.S. Team Roping Competition.
1996 saw Sutherland in supporting roles in some high-profile films such as “An Eye For An Eye,” playing the child killer and rapist of Sally Field’s character’s daughter. He also starred as a Ku Klux Klan member in “A Time to Kill.”
In 1997, he starred with his mother in a Canadian production of The Glass Menagerie.”
2001 saw Sutherland’s career skyrocket as he is now starring in the hit crime series, “24,” as “Agent Jack Bauer.” The role has won him a Golden Globe for Best Actor in 2001 and Screen Actors Guild Awards 2004 and 2006.
Other films Sutherland has appeared in include 2004’s “Taking Lives,” co-starring Angelina Jolie and Ethan Hawke and 2006’s “The Sentinel.” Starring Michael Douglas, Eva Longoria and Kim Basinger.
In 1988, Sutherland married actress Camelia Kath. The couple have a daughter, Sarah Jude. The marriage lasted only two years. In 1990, he starred with actress Julia Roberts in “Flatliners.” The two began dating and were a big Hollywood couple. They were engaged in 1991 but the nuptials wee called off just days before it was scheduled. In 1996, he married former model, Kelly Winn. They are in the process of divorcing. Between season 2 and 3 of “24.” Sutherland began dating his co-star Reiko Aylesworth.
