May 2 is really World Naked Gardening Day

Today is May Day and Tuesday is Cinco De Mayo, but if you are looking for something to celebrate in between, there is always World Naked Gardening Day. Yes, this is a real thing and it’s celebrated on the first Saturday of May.

A website set up for the holiday assures us that gardening while naked is not only fun, but it’s also among the top two activities that people feel comfortable doing while naked. (The first is swimming.) It’s a way to help you get more connected to nature while doing an activity that humans were doing even before we polluted the world.

The creators of the holiday note that they don’t have a political agenda, so the only way to celebrate the holiday is to actually get out there and garden without clothes on.

“Events like WNGD can help develop a sense of community among people of every stripe,” the site notes. “Taking part in something that is bigger than any one household, naturist group, or gardening club can move gardeners with an au naturel joie de vivre toward becoming a community. And in the case of WNGD, it's fun, costs no money, runs no unwanted risk, reminds us of our tie to the natural world, and does something good for the environment.”

According to HolidaysInYear.com, the WNGD was created by Mark Storey and the Body Freedom Collaborative and first announced in a 2005 issue of Nude & Natural magazine. World Naked Bike Ride also supported the holiday, helping it gain worldwide attention.
