Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim
by David Sedaris
Sit back and get ready for a good, long laugh.
David Sedaris is a very funny writer. And his book Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim does not disappoint. Like his book Me Talk Pretty One Day, this book is a very funny collection of stories illustrating his life. Sedaris' stories are so funny because the characters seem to have a genuine drive to live and do what they believe to be just and correct, and what seems like lunacy to the readers. Sedaris is quite likable and gentle in his writing. His humor is not malicious, and there is an obvious love for the majority of his subjects.
The phrase stranger than fiction describes Sedaris' upbringing. It is fascinating to observe that after everything the author has gone through he is still a positive and energetic writer. He is not jaded; indeed, he guides the reader through text laden with wide-eyed wonder and enthusiasm. Adventures in this book include Sedaris getting hit in the face with a rock by a boy he had a crush on, and then his father demanding the bully's father pay for the ensuing root canal. There are also chapters on the family who does not watch TV; his first sleepover; parents that are more like house cats; and his brother, the self-titled Rooster. Sedaris' subjects are illustrated as wacky and loopy, but his stories always are respectful and told simply as though Sedaris was personally relating them to an old friend.
