1984
by George Orwell
A dark book about what happens when government takes over our lives.
The year is 1984. Winston Smith runs through the street carrying contraband, a notebook and pencil. In it he writes, “Down with Big Brother.” He knows he will get into unspeakable trouble if he gets caught from the many eyes and ears that watch his every move. He is beyond caring. All that matters now is freedom.
1984, by George Orwell, is the story of a totalitarian society where the slogan “Big Brother is Watching” is pasted everywhere. It is a place where everything is done for the political party and five minutes everyday is designated to collectively hating and berating the enemy. Winston works destroying information that the party in power doesn’t want the people to know about. He becomes increasingly dissatisfied with the lies that everyone is being fed and tries to rebel against the state. The problem is how do you rebel against a government that watches your every move and will stop at nothing to keep in power?
This novel is a dark look into a dystopian society run by fear and hatred and is a warning to any society that gives too much power to the state. Although written in 1948, the message still rings true in today’s world. Orwell is a master at social commentary as this book provides a look at the terror that a totalitarian society can cause. Orwell’s storytelling propels the reader forward not only with his astute insight, but also with his ability to create an entirely different world from our own that is so real and yet so frightening.
