The Pirate Dictionary
by Terry Breverton
A complete guide to everything pirates!
In honor of the upcoming holiday (although it is not recognized by the government), this book invites everyone to learn their pirate jargon and terminology. National ‘Talk Like A Pirate Day’ is September 19th annually, and while this book was not created for that reason specifically, it will certainly lend all readers the chance to astound friends and families with their extensive pirate knowledge.
In the vein of other books, such as Heavens To Betsy, the book explains the origins of such popular, and regularly used phrases, as “Hit the deck,” “Steer clear of,” “To harbor a grudge,” and “Don’t rock the boat.” On top of phrases, words and definitions, the book also includes entries like the “Pirate Flags,” which show pictures of the flags used by pirates like the famous Blackbeard. Other types of entry go into the lore and history of a given pirate or event.
For example, the entry for “ ‘Black’ Bart Roberts” (d. 1722): “The most famous pirate in history was born John Roberts, and was a lifelong teetotaler. It is interesting that in the 19th century, doing ‘a John Roberts’ in Wales, was to drink from Saturday morning until Sunday night. He was also known as ‘The Great Pyrate’, ‘The Black Captain’, and is generally regarded as the ‘last and most lethal pirate.’ He took over 400 recorded prizes from the coast of Africa to the Caribbean, and was by far the most successful and most feared pirate of all time.”
Somewhat hilarious, but largely historical and generally a fun read. Very informative and interesting.
