After three years in prison, Shadow is released to find his wife dead and a mysterious man named Wednesday offering him a job. With nothing else to go back to, Shadow accepts the job as Wednesday’s body guard. He tells Shadow a storm is coming as he goes around recruiting people to fight. These are not ordinary people as Shadow learns, but gods brought over to America and forgotten along the way. In order not to die out, they must fight against the new gods of TV, internet, and pop culture. Shadow isn’t sure what he has to do with all this, but he is soon pulled in deeper than he ever dreamed.
Gaiman is a gifted storyteller and knows how to string events and details into a clever plot. Even if the story centers on gods, this is a human tale of life and love. This book captures the American landscape as well as the amalgamation that is American culture. It is a wonderfully vivid story that fabulously integrates its many myths and legends.
