Math in Minutes
by Sharon MacDonald
Math In Minutes is an easy to use assembly of math activities for children ages 4-8.
Math in Minutes is a great resource for teachers, or even parents, of children in grades Pre-K through third. The book is divided into nine chapters -- Teach Math? Me?; Number Sense and Numeration; Computation and Estimation; Measurement, Time and Money; Geometry and Spatial Sense; Sorting; Classifying; Graphing and Possibility; Patterns; Problem Solving and Reasoning; and Putting it All Together.
This book is a treasure trove of ideas, especially valuable to the newer teacher, with each lesson divided into Materials, Objectives and Procedures. In all there are about 100 lesson plans, with some basic standard ideas, as well as some novel approaches. After teaching for over 30 years, it is usually difficult for me to find a resource book on any subject with some practical ideas I have not already incorporated or tried before. Math in Minutes managed to supply me with at least a dozen new ideas that I am anxious to try.
The book also contains a glossary of math terms, illustrations and graphs -- many which can be duplicated, NCTM standards and how they apply to each lesson, recommended math books for children, as well as math websites for teachers.
I would recommend this book to any new math teacher, as well as parents who want to help their child have fun and do well in math.
