Face The Fire
by Nora Roberts
Fire has to take back the control in her life to save her sisters and break a curse.
Mia Devlin is a force of nature who has always been in control of her own fate. However, when the boy who not only broke her heart, but left her shattered with nearly no sense of self returns to Three Sisters as a successful man, Mia's heart is turned upside-down. For Sam Logan wasn't only compatible in a mortal sense, he is literally the water to Mia's fire. Each of the descendants of the three sisters has a specific gift that corresponds to the related sister. Nell Channing has the gift of air, Ripley Todd the gift of earth and Mia the gift of fire. Sam Logan's gift may not exactly be a part of the three sisters bond, but the gift of water provides a strength and balance to the mix.
A centuries-old curse will soon come to pass if Mia and Sam cannot move beyond past hurts. The descendants of the sisters are each supposed to make a choice, to counteract the damaging choices made by the original sisters. Air originally chose death over her abusive marriage, and Earth was consumed by revenge for Air's suicide. Fire placed a curse on the island, which if left in place would sink the island and all inhabitants into the sea.
Mia has to deal with the dark magic at its strongest. She may be the strongest of the three women, but her internal imbalance caused by Sam's return puts the whole operation in jeopardy. She has to find a way to work with Sam to save the island she loves.
Mia and Sam's relationship is the most interesting of the three stories, but only because of the characters, not the situation itself. Past history coming back to rekindle is an old story and would be completely flat if not for Mia's vibrancy and arrogance pitted against Sam's dry wit and lovable nature. When they finally come together, it is as powerful emotionally as it is physically -– and the reader can feel it.
The resolution to this series is magical. It's sad to let go of such wonderful characters, but it's satisfying to receive the right amount of closure. Roberts has a talent for trilogies and series. The development is constant, while leaving the reader hungry for more.
