i hate this place - The Pessimist's Guide to Life
by Jimmy Fallon & Gloria Fallon
This book does suck, or are we being sarcastic too?
The title is wonderful and the Prologue is a promise, but the book sucks.
This brother and sister act of negative introspection dropped the ball. They
ran with the idea when they should have punted life's philosophies into the
goal post. The true pessimist is quite confident in his ability to see
things as they actually are. The Fallons treat this spiritual gift with
disdain and mockery. This book could have helped to understand,
how the pessimist foretells events which will unfold and how he reads life like
a hunter in the forest: all the little signs that add up to "I just knew it
wouldn't work". They tried. Yea! They failed. Boo! I had a bad feeling all
along that they would. The one-liner observation written in a motto form
across a disjointed cartoon, repeated over and over and, well you get
the idea. Such limited creativity is like using a pencil stub: good enough
to do the job but leaves you in pain from trying to grasp it. For example,
one reflection mentions all the ice cream men driving around and ends with a
rejoinder of "you'd think one of them would have the sense to blast some
decent music for a change." This is typed across a cartoon of a house on
fire. What has a house got to do with ice cream? Why didn't they show some
pastoral winter scene with kid eating the yellow snow? Ice cream - snow.
Now, that is a clear association. They should include a dollar inside the
book for a cup of coffee. That way the coffee smells not the book.
