Self Nurture
by Alice Domar, Ph.D. and Henry Dreher, M.D.
Learning to Care for Yourself as Effectively as You Care for Others
Dr. Alice Domar provides women and other caregivers with sound information and concrete techniques to reduce stress and improve overall health.
The author, a pioneer in the field of women’s behavioral medicine, is one of the most renowned individuals in the nation on this issue. The information is so accurate and eloquently written that every woman will find herself within the pages of this book. Domar uses her gift of empathy for women’s stressors, academic knowledge, and research experience to relate a set of well researched techniques that can be used by any person to elicit the relaxation response.
Much of her advice is based on the well-known fact that the body has the built-in capability to elicit relaxation known as the parasympathetic nervous system. Regular practice of tools that elicit this response lead to improved immune functioning, decreased reproductive issues, decreased stress related medical issues, and overall improved health. Behavioral tools such as diaphragmatic breathing and progressive muscle relaxation are taught in an easy to understand, user friendly format, leaving the reader feeling empowered to utilize the techniques on a regular basis. Cognitive skills known to be helpful in stress reduction are also simplified and explained, and the combination lends the reader a sound knowledge of the cognitive behavioral skills that are often taught in private sessions averaging $125 an hour with a psychologist.
Domar’s work is another “diamond in the rough” within the self help section. Her work is empirically valid, easy to understand, and well written. Best of all, it works.
