The Sleepeasy Solution

by Jennfer Waldburger and Jill Spivack

Helping the Exhausted Parent Teach Their Child Better Sleep Habits

Nothing redefines the meaning of exhaustion like new parenthood. New parents often feel a sense of desperation to escape the torture of chronic, severe sleep deprivation. Exhausted parents, take heed-there does happen to be one book on the market that works. Jennifer Waldburger and Jill Spivack, two licensed social workers gone savvy entrepreneur, decided to enlighten those of us who live outside of L.A. with their written version of the Sleepy Planet program. There are hundreds of books on the market regarding the issue of infant sleep, yet few target specific sleep problems with concrete solutions.

The techniques, based on well established behavioral principles, are results oriented. Better yet, the book is written with the exhausted parent in mind, giving a brief introduction and then encouraging the parent to skip to the chapter that best fits their child’s stage of life. Some parents who feel passionately about the “cry it out” versus the “no cry” sleep solutions will get stuck with some of the suggestions, due to the fact that the child will likely cry on occasion. However, this book is NOT a “cry it out” method; in fact, it is a “help to teach the child to self soothe” method. In certain situations, parents are encouraged to stand aside for a limited amount of time, while occasionally offering verbal reassurance to foster self soothing. Perhaps this is a good metaphor for parenting; should parents always rescue their children from sadness or other pain, the child will most assuredly lack the ability to cope with life’s inevitable problems and overall character. Certainly, there are times when it is appropriate to “stand aside” while offering support and reassurance.

Overall, this is a well written, user friendly manual that will empower parents to effect positive change for the entire family through improved sleep habits. Parents who wish to learn more are encouraged to visit sleepyplanet.com for helpful charts and objective data. Those parents experiencing chronic exhaustion with infants and young children will find that the expense of this book is more of an investment than an actual cost.
