Babyproofing Your Marriage
by Stacdie Cockrell, Cathy O'Neill, and Julia Stone
How to Laugh More, Argue Less, and Communicate Better as Your Family Grows
The changes that couples face after the arrival of a new baby often leave couples feeling drained, overwhelmed, and sometimes even sitting in the marital counselor’s office. In Babyproofing Your Marriage, three mothers who are also wives, friends, and career women join forces to tackle the most common marital issues that often accompany new parenthood. Nothing is off topics in this no-holds-barred handbook for parents, in which the authors lend their own experiences as well as those of other women to create a synopsis of stories and philosophies for married couples.
The authors begin with the nearly universal decline in marital satisfaction which occurs upon the arrival of a couple’s first baby, and go on to identify a wide range of marital challenges. Problems with grandparents, communication differences, and even work related problems are discussed. The frankness and authenticity with which the authors and other contributors reveal themselves and identify common marital concerns are not only hilarious, but true. The differences between male and female thought patterns and behaviors seem to surface during parenthood, and family dynamics are often painfully magnified. Their metaphor for the sexual woes often associated with new parenthood, “the ice queen-hound dog vortex,” will bring any couple together in laughter and mutual understanding.
Readers will enjoy this book as well as sharing it together. The thought that these problems are so universal is oddly comforting and reassuring for any couple, particularly during such a vulnerable time in marriage. Thanks to these intelligent women for bringing such taboo topics to the forefront of conversations for many new parents.
