The Purpose Driven Life
by Rick Warren
Finding Your Purpose Through Christianity
The title has curb appeal to many struggling to cultivate greater meaning in their life, but the content will appeal only to those looking for a Christian-based life guide.
Rick Warren, a Baptist pastor who leads a largely successful congregation in Southern California, wrote this scripture-based book to help those looking for greater purpose find it through devout Christianity.
Warren claims that the five cornerstones of happy living are ministry, evangelism, worship, discipleship, and community. He goes on to provide scriptural based lessons to exemplify the points further.
Readers looking for a more spiritually-based self help book will find The Purpose Driven Life disappointing. Even those readers who consider themselves Christians but feel turned off by rigid orthodoxy may close the book before finishing. Warren is an expert in the scripture and provides endless bible quotes and interpretations throughout the book that will appeal to those who find guidance within literal styles of bible interpretation. In one chapter on community, Warren even claims that the only true family any individual has is his Christian community, and that biological families do not constitute real “brothers.”
Self help books are a dime a dozen, which can make it difficult to find the right fit for the reader interests and beliefs. Those looking for a self help guide with a strong Christian foundation will find comfort and guidance within the pages of this book. Even readers of other religions who wish to learn more about Christianity will learn a great deal about it through Warren’s work. Anyone wishing for a book with easier spiritual undertones should look towards a new age self help book like A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle, whose guidance is based on more universal philosophies and spirituality.
