Adventures of Riley, The

by Amanda Lumry, Laura Hurwitz, Sarah McIntyre

Kids get to travel around the world with Riley

The Adventures of Riley is a fun series of books that will satisfy any child's love of adventure and animals, two favorite kid topics. Nine year old Riley travels to the heart of South Africa, in this latest installment, to meet his adventuresome Uncle Max, a famous biologist, and to help count the animal population. As he camps out in the wild, the reader gets introduced to many familiar and not so familiar animals, like the elephant and the wild dog. The detailed text gives factual information on each animal in a side box, whetting the child's appetite for more research. The color photographs with superimposed illustrations draw the reader into the book, with a perfect blend of fantasy and reality. The book is a great read aloud for any class or student doing a study on the animals of South Africa or with a natural interest in anything "wild". Though the book uses the age guideline of 4 to 8 years of age, the text is a little wordy for the average four year old. As I read the story to my Pre-Kindergarten class, I found myself condensing each page in order to keep their attention. An older child age 6 to 8, would be able to more appreciate the detailed and informative text, though some of the vocabulary is a stretch for even an eight year old. For example, the phrase GPS was used throughout the book, yet it was never really defined for a child to understand.

A neat added attraction to this series is a passport in the back of the book that children can add a sticker to, with each book that they read. If the child enjoys the book, he will certainly want to collect more stickers for his "passport".

There is also a website for the reader to peruse, where for fifty cents cover charge your young adventurer can sign up as a member and receive a gold passport sticker, a membership card and a newsletter of fun facts. The website itself www.adventuresofriley.com is free and there are games to play with of course a link to the first book- Tigers in Terai. Counting all of the spaces on the passport, I am sure the writers have plans for many more travels to come. Watch out for the adventures to continue.
