The Harlequin
by Laurell K. Hamilton
A mask is presented and a centuries old secret is revealed, but sshh . . . they must not be spoken of.
So in case you haven’t heard, there’s a new vampire writer in town. In fact, she’s been around for quite a while. Laurell K. Hamilton takes vampire novels to an extreme that even Anne Rice wouldn’t and didn’t dare attempt. The latest installment in her popular Anita Blake series has it all and more. The Harlequin is one of those novels that keeps you so enthralled that you completely forget all prior commitments until you’ve finished it. In fact, I should probably go pick up that dry cleaning now. Either way, let’s just say that it definitely does not disappoint.
Anita Blake, vampire executioner, is at it again. She’s the human servant of Jean Claude, Master of the City and someone has just sent them a nasty message. While on a date with one of her significant others, a mysterious box appears containing a white mask. Since it’s highly unlikely that someone’s inviting them to a masquerade ball, Anita calls Jean Claude and soon discovers that the mask means something quite unpleasant. Something that cannot be spoken of is soon to be upon their city and they must ban together with the others. But that's easier said than done.
With scenes that’ll make you blush and enough twists and turns to keep you up at night, The Harlequin proves that Hamilton has quite outdone herself. Each installment in the series seems to get better and better. One bite is enough to draw blood, but it is her words that keep you going. A vampire novel that even those who aren't particularly enthralled with our fanged friends will enjoy.
