Brand X, The Boyfriend Account
by Laurie Gwen Shapiro
Brand X tells a bland story.
Anyone who wants an out of the ordinary book, you may stop now. Brand X, The Boyfriend Account, by Laurie Gwen Shapiro, is said to be "wildly humorous." However, while some might consider it, overall, humorous, it is doubtful there is anything so wild about it. The whole concept of the story is certainly different, but because there is a slightly different approach to it. In reality, it is quite uncertain if Brand X can really keep the claim for being "wildy humorous."
Fate had it so Jordie Popkin, an aspiring journalist, missed the once in a lifetime opportunity to intern at The New York Times. Not only that, most of the other good internships were also taken. So what does Jordie end up with? She lands an internship at an ad agency which comes up with premiums [think Happy Meal toys].
While others scoff at her work, Jordie enjoys working there. It is not only interesting, but the people there also take interest in her life. In fact, her colleagues come up with plans for Jordie to properly market herself to her crush-- who also happens to be the crush of every other girl in her grade.
There are occassionally some amusing parts in the book, but for the most part, the book lacks substance. Brand X is the sort of book you might read when you have so much time on your hands that you don't know what else to do with all of it. Laurie Gwen Shapiro doesn't entirely make the cut with her debut young adult novel.
