Posh
by Lucy Jackson
A look at life at an elite Manhattan Upper East Side school with the most privileged students.
Lucy Jackson weaves an unforgettable story with Posh. With the setting of Griffin, a preparatory school on Manhattan’s Upper East Side with the most privileged students, Posh is anything but boring. With the emotionally damaged characters, the book serves as a very realistic eye-opener.
First, there is Kathryn Hoffman—better known as “Lazy”—the headmaster of the school. She does her best to tend to her students, as well as the great demands of the parents. Lazy juggles figuring out what to do about her students not making the top schools, and at the same time, an affair she doesn’t know why she’s having.
Then there is Michael Avery, a brilliant student. He’s aiming for Cambridge though manages to get somewhere even better. However, he suffers from a bipolar disorder as well as a great neediness for his girlfriend.
There is Michael’s mother, Susan Avery, who is overall, a detached person. Specifically, she is detached from her own son and finds it easier to spend time with her dog than him.
Julianne Coopersmith is a sweet girl who, for the most part, doesn’t mind that she’s not as well off as most of her other friends. Instead, she accepts being with a single mother and she accepts her friend’s old designer clothes. Her compassion even allows her to stick to Michael, despite how much his problems burden her.
Julianne’s mother, Dee Coopersmith, remains bitter as a divorcee whose husband has moved well on while she’s left driving a cab. In her loneliness, she holds on to Julianne tightly.
Morgan Goldfine, Julianne’s best friend, is the girl who has everything. That is, until Morgan’s mother dies of cancer and she struggles to get over her loss.
Each character’s inner struggle is raw and powerful. It is quite interesting to see how all the lives of the main characters intersect and intertwine. If anything, it just makes the story even more fascinating than it already is.
Posh is deep, poignant, and exquisitely written. The further you get into the story, and the more the characters and plot develop, the more you will be hooked. Lucy Jackson does wonderfully in this intense, fast paced novel.
