Stargirl
by Jerry Spinelli
“Stargirl” tells a powerful story about love, courage, and nonconformity.
Jerry Spinelli is known for his enthralling stories that serve as eye-openers. From Maniac Magee to Wringer, Spinelli’s exemplary writings have become classics. Stargirl is undoubtedly another one of Spinelli’s successes.
Mica High School is an ordinary high school until one day, someone extraordinary comes along. A girl who goes by the name of Stargirl arrives and changes everyone’s lives at Mica High forever. Having been homeschooled all her life, Stargirl has potentially lived a sheltered life. She arrives at Mica naïve, yet eccentric, and unknowingly pushes the envelope. Stargirl dresses funky, carries around a pet rat, sings happy birthday to her peers, plays the ukulele, and leaves random presents for people—to name a few things. Eventually, Leo Borlock and the rest of the school become mesmerized by her and Stargirl’s popularity skyrockets.
And then Stargirl becomes a cheerleader and everything changes. Stargirl doesn’t stop cheering and she also happens to cheer for everyone—including rival teams. After an incident at a basketball game, Stargirl’s fame disappears almost instantaneously overnight. Everyone begins to shun Stargirl and, in turn, she becomes an outcast.
Leo, who has fallen head over heels in love with Stargirl, is brought down with her. Leo is then forced to decide between his love for Stargirl and his desire to belong.
Stargirl tells a powerful story about love, courage, and nonconformity. Readers will certainly be moved by this touching novel. Stargirl is one of Jerry Spinelli’s best works, and taking into account his other great books, this should say something.
