Twilight
by Stephenie Meyer
A suspenseful, dark romance between a human and a vampire.
Bella, 17, has little to look forward to when she moves to the gloomy town of Forks, WA to live with her father. From the gray, rainy weather, to her distant relationship with her dad, there is little in town that attracts her attention. Yet all of that begins to change on her first day of school when she sees Edward Cullen for the first time. From his striking good looks to his mysterious persona, Bella finds herself drawn towards Edward.
As time passes, however, it becomes clear that there is more to Edward Cullen and his family than meets the eye. Edward’s immense physical strength and his frequent, long disappearances lead Bella to question who, or what, he really is. By the time she comes to understand the truth about him: that he is a vampire struggling against his desires to kill humans, she has fallen irreversibly in love. Their relationship is dangerous, as Edward struggles between his undying love for Bella and his desire to hunt her. More than just a teenage love story, Bella and Edward’s dark romance is complex and timeless.
Meyer’s true strength is in her descriptions of Edward and Bella’s love for one another and her development of their relationship. Though Bella occasionally acts too naïve for readers to find believable and her first person narration and descriptions of Edward can drag, Twilight succeeds in making readers feel for and believe enough in its characters to overlook these small details. By the end of the novel, Meyer has managed to create a beautiful story of love, passion, and devotion—one that will leave readers clamoring for the sequel.
