Gossip Girl, The Carlyles #1

by Cecily von Ziegesar

A new era of elite Manhattan teens emerge.

Blair Waldorf and Serena van der Woodsen’s crowd ruled the Upper East Side, as well as the Gossip Girl series, until recently when they had all dispersed and gone off to college. Lucky for us, the Carlyles have arrived. Living in Blair Waldorf’s former home are now the Carlyle triplets who are taking over the Upper East Side. The new Gossip Girl, The Carlyles series is all about Avery, Baby, and Owen Carlyle. Fresh from Nantucket, Massachusetts, the Carlyle triplets have arrived to the world of Manhattan penthouses and elite private schools. With the new Gossip Girl series comes a new era of Upper East Side’s posh elusive teens.

There are Avery and Baby at the familiar Constance Billiard School for Girls. Avery wants to greatly reinvent herself but finds herself at a rough start. Butting heads with the most popular girl—before school has even begun—and being mistaken for a shoplifter, Avery has quite a lot of reinventing she might need to do. However, she is determined to gain popularity and win the favor and approval of her new classmates.

Meanwhile, on the other end of the spectrum, Baby could care less about Constance Billiard’s or even Manhattan. She fails to see the impressiveness of where she is at now; all Baby wants is to go home to her old life and to her boyfriend.

Meanwhile, at the also familiar St. Jude’s School for Boys, their brother Owen is having it good. With Owen’s superior swimming abilities, he is quickly accepted by his schoolmates. He’s become good friends with the captain of the swim team. Best of all, Owen has found the girl of his dreams in front of his face—again. But the downside is that she is taken . . . by his new best friend.

Like in the original Gossip Girl series, Gossip Girl is right there beside you giving her two cents worth. Gossip Girl, The Carlyles is decently scandalous. It doesn’t quite measure up to the original series, but it may be too soon to tell. For an introduction to the Carlyle triplets, the book fares quite well.
