Fancy Pants
by Cathy Marie Hake
Woman poses as man to escape arranged marriage.
Lady Sydney Hathwell travels to America to see if Hume is the man she wants to marry. But he wants her to marry him and let him keep a mistress. He only wants her for her title. Her father and mother have died. So while he is on a business trip, with the help of her aunt, she dresses like a man and slips out of town to go see her uncle. It was easier for her to travel alone as a man.
The things she gets into when she reaches her uncle's farm and he isn't there are funny, sad and endearing. You laugh, you cry, and you keep reading.
Finally she is found out and everything changes. Tim Creighton is her uncle's partner and he tries to toughen her up as a man. Then when he finds out she is a woman, he feels deceived and it takes him a while to realize he loves her.
In the end, Hume shows up on her wedding day and tries to claim her as his bride. I'll leave you guessing what happens here.
