365 Penguins
by Jean-Luc Fromental
A family receives a penguin each day.
An oversized children’s picture book by Jean-Luc Fromental, 365 Penguins is both fun and funny. At nine in the morning on New Year’s Day, a delivery man arrives at the front door to bring an anonymous package to a family. They open the box to find a penguin inside with a note: “I’m number 1. Feed me when I’m hungry.” The next day, another penguin arrives. And then another. A penguin arrives for every day of the year. So on the last day of the year, there are 365 penguins altogether—hence the title.
The father tries to organize the vast penguins and thus, cleverly brings forth math concepts into the story. With math, the family members try to organize, care, and feed the penguins. Still, with 365 penguins, they are everywhere. The penguins run around everywhere, they knock furniture and things over, watch TV, and eat everything.
The children's book, 365 Penguins, is a wonderful story that will be enjoyed by children of all ages. Whether or not they will be old enough to understand all the math concepts, 365 Penguins is so goofy, fun, and comical, it is quite difficult to not like the story. The illustrations have a fun, retro feel to them due to the color scheme and further bring the story alive. All in all, 365 Penguins is one of those rare stories that are both exhilarating and educational.
